We have been following the process of Healthcare reform very closely with the hope that we would be able to report that benefits for long-term rehabilitation for stroke and TBI survivors would be part of the mix of full coverage for all. The Stroke Recovery Center has been offering rehabilitation for free for 30 years because of the lack of insurance rehabilitation benefits to long term survivors. As we say, we begin where others leave off and continue to offer hope and help for as long as you need us. We do this because the results are positive and over the years we have helped many people to get control over their live and to thrive even with their disabilities. However, with the exception of just a couple of other places in the country, we are the only facility of its kind in the United States. As a community based service, we are not a costly provider. We rely heavily on volunteers and dedicated employees, most of whom are not full time. We have a devoted Board of Directors who focuses on raising money so that we may continue giving our services year after year. Our loyal supporters donate year after year so that we may continue to grow and offer high quality services to more and more people every year. With minimal support, services such as ours could be replicated in other parts of the country. In fact looking at the salaries of the CEOs of the five leading health insurance companies for 2007-2008 (not a banner year for them), the $53,900,000 they were paid would support 67 centers for a year assuming a cost of $800,000 per year. We have been hoping that healthcare reform would open the door to funding for community based long term care solutions and that the Stroke Recovery Center could be part of the discussion going forward. We are not giving up on this and will continue to fight for a voice at the table until the needs of each of you are met.
