Research at the Stroke Recovery Center has shown that we must continue striving for improvement years after our stroke. We are now into our third year of research that has been sponsored by the Desert Healthcare District in Palm Springs, CA. Working with the dollars that the District has granted us, we have been able to track the effectiveness of our programming on helping our clients to regain feasible functionality, control over the activities of daily living and maximal independence as they recover abilities to walk, communicate and regain some control over their lives. Our research focuses on the benefits that are accrued to the healthcare system as a whole by the client's participation in our program. Since we are a non-clinical program, we look at outcomes and influences as opposed to measuring the improvement in strength, flexibility and the like. We look at what types of things are our client able to do, able to use or types of behaviors that may or may not be influences by the continued improvement our client see as participants here at the Stroke Recovery Center. We have been able to demonstrate our clients become more independent, fall less and are less likely to use the ER and are more likely to use public transportation. All of these issues support the value to the healthcare system as whole of our program to say nothing of the value to the stroke survivor and his/her family.
