First Administrator's Report

It is hard to believe that the Stroke Recovery Center has been helping stroke survivors for over 30 years and in all that time, not one other center has figured out how to do the same thing for free. It is estimated that there are 4-5 million people in the United States who have survived a stroke. We project that 65% of those people would benefit from the services that we provide here at the Stroke Recovery Center. When you start adding to that number the caregivers and the families who are also affected and the numbers become very large – large enough to warrant a place at the table in discussions of long term care alternatives for stroke survivors. Over the years, the Stroke Recovery Center has been recognized as “best practice” for long term treatment of stroke survivors. Our comprehensive effort to treat the person as a whole – cognitive, physical and social beings – has proven results that are documented by our research. We can offer hope and we can deliver results and we can do it all for free.

The question becomes how do we help more people given that a limited number of people can afford to come and live in Palm Springs (over the years a number of folks have actually moved here just to take part in our programs). There is more than one answer to that question and it is a question we will be exploring in depth as we continue this conversation. We will discuss health care reform and how it affects stroke survivors, we will discuss ways that we as the Stroke Recovery Center are trying to get you more help and we will discuss how you as a stroke survivor or friend of a stroke survivor can help in your home town. We will also keep you current as to what is going on at our center, what is working, what is not and what you can do at home to help speed your recovery.

I hope that you will feel free to open a dialogue with me or with any of our therapists. My email is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We are here to help you, answer your questions and aid your recovery in any way possible. Remember, you must never give up hope.
