When a stroke happens
Clients practice speech therapy using special computer
software under supervision of professional speech &
language pathologist volunteer.
If you or someone you know has had a
stroke, it is very traumatic and lifechanging.
We believe there can be
good quality life after stroke. Significant
improvement can be made during the
rehabilitation process on the “road to
recovery” no matter how long it has
been since the initial stroke. Attending
programs at the Stroke Recovery Center
can make a positive change in life after
stroke for stroke survivors, families and
caregivers.
What does the Center offer?
- Recreation therapy programs
- Occupational therapy programs
- Physical therapy
- Speech therapy
- Socialization with other stroke survivors (which helps regain self-confidence and measure of independence).
- Support groups for families
- Respite for caregivers
How often can someone attend?
The center’s unique rehabilitation obstacle course
help clients in activities of daily living, like stair
climbing.
Programs are offered Monday through
Friday, 8:30 AM to 3 PM. A stroke client
can attend five days a week or part of
one day whatever is most suitable for him/her. We encourage stroke clients to
participate in activities one or more days
each week to secure maximum
rehabilitation benefits. While the stroke
survivor is participating in programs at
the Center, the spouse or caregiver then
has time to relax and reenergize
herself/himself, an important component
in living with the aftereffects of stroke
There are weekly support meetings that
encourage friendships and sponsor
activities in the community.
How does someone become a client?
A 30-45 minute evaluation appointment
is conducted by our therapy staff to
assess each stroke survivor’s
rehabilitation needs. Call (760) 323-7676 to
set up an appointment or to learn more
about the center’s programs.
How much does it cost?
Services are offered on a no-fee basis to
help alleviate the financial burden of
long-term rehabilitation and to enhance
recovery. Clients who are financially
able are encouraged to make regular
donations.
“When I first came to the Center I was in a wheelchair.
Now I
can walk and am able to drive my car again.
The Center has
given me my life back.”

The Center receives no funds from
federal government and relies on
donations from clients, individuals,
businesses, foundations, grants and
multiple fund raising events. The Center’s small professional staff is aided
by a large group of dedicated volunteers.
More volunteers are always needed in
various capacities working directly with
clients and/or ancillary services. To
learn more about how you can help by
volunteering, call the Center.
Founded in 1978 by Dr. Irving
Hirshleifer, the Stroke Center provides
state-of-the-art rehabilitation and
support for families. Recovery from
stroke is a lifelong process. At the
Stroke Center “we begin where others
leave off” as we address the physical,
psychological and resocialization needs
of the stroke survivor.
Work done at the center is recognized
by the American Congress of
Rehabilitation, the Academy of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation, National
Stroke Association, and American
Geriatric Society.
The Center offers state and nationally
certified recreation therapy internship
programs.
The Center also serves as a field trip
site for various nursing and occupational
therapy schools for the study of a fullservice
community-based stroke
recovery program.
The Center offers community programs
designed to reach those in need of our
services in all areas of the Coachella
Valley. Our Hispanic outreach program
is supported by a Spanish speaking
therapist.
